We caught up with SEPT to talk about the vision behind the EP, his creative reset during a tour in Colombia, and what’s next for both him and the OPUS universe.

We’re so happy to have you on board with our KEYI community! Could you introduce yourself to everyone?

It’s a pleasure for me as well, thank you for the invitation! My real name is Michel, but I am widely known as Sept. I originally come from Warsaw, Poland, where I began exploring my interest in music production, DJing, and event curation and promotion by participating in numerous event-focused projects. For the past three years, I have been based in Berlin, where I came up with the idea of creating my record label and event series called OPUS.

We just celebrated the event at Säule – Berghain together — what are your thoughts now that it’s behind us?

It took me a while to process everything that happened during your event, but it was truly an unforgettable experience. I had been to a few Thursday parties at Säule / Berghain before, so I kind of knew what to expect. However, this time the excitement was much higher, as I had the pleasure of being responsible for taking care of the vibe and energy on the dance floor, by delivering a closing set! Also, seeing so many familiar faces made me feel so comfortable behind the booth that it almost felt like I had played there before. I have to say, that kind of ease doesn’t come very often when performing in a new club.

As a label owner, how do you approach curating your releases? What guides your decisions — is it the sound, the philosophy behind the music, or something about the artist’s energy that speaks to your vision?

It’s a bit of everything you’ve already mentioned, but the most important thing for me is to release timeless music that will be played by DJs and listened to by people for ages, regardless of changing trends.

“Leave Your Body” feels like a new expression of your musical direction — still rooted in your past, yet reaching toward the future. What inspired the concept behind this EP?

The concept of this release comes from the time of my Colombian tour, which took place at the beginning of October 2024. Back then, I had just finished a big project that had consumed much of my attention and energy for most of the previous year. That commitment had a significant impact on blocking my creativity, which had been bothering me for quite a while. I went on that trip with a clear mind and a fresh approach, which led me to adopt an attitude of leaving things behind and moving forward, not being afraid to experiment and search for a new musical identity, while still staying true to my original style.

Can you walk us through your creative process for this release?

Like I mentioned before, all the tracks were started while I was touring between Bogotá and Medellín. Since I was there alone, I focused a lot on myself and made a promise not to limit my creativity in any way, just to go with the flow. During that time, I created two tracks from scratch and started six sketches, which I finalized soon after returning to Berlin. While working on these sketches, ideas kept flowing from one project to another, which led me to develop several concepts in parallel. This was quite a shift for me, as my usual rule in the past was not to start new projects before finishing the previous ones. But at that moment, the most important thing was the final result, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

You’ve toured across Europe and Asia. How have different scenes and audiences influenced the way you approach your music today?

Every place has different crowds, and it’s hard to compare these experiences. Each audience and space I perform at gives me distinct creative influences. However, after years of touring, I can definitely say that one of the most important things is to create and play music that triggers emotions in the listeners. These emotions can be very diverse, ranging from happiness to even fear. In the end, emotional connections last much longer than trends and help build a loyal community around the artist.

With this EP marking a new chapter, what’s next for Sept and OPUS? Are there more releases, events, or cross-disciplinary projects on the horizon?

As for Sept, I can say that you can expect a few more releases this year, not only on OPUS, but also on labels whose music I regularly play in my sets. Regarding OPUS, together with Danté, we are working on a few events outside of ELSE (Berlin) and Crackhouse (Gdańsk), which will be announced soon on our channels, so stay tuned!
